Physical therapy is an essential part of the recovery process after a total knee replacement (TKR) surgery. TKR is a procedure that replaces the damaged cartilage and bone in the knee joint with artificial components. This can improve the function and reduce the pain of the knee, but it also requires a period of rehabilitation to restore the mobility and strength of the joint.
Physical therapy after TKR typically starts in the hospital, where a physical therapist (PT) helps the patient with exercises and functional activities. The PT may also use a device called a continuous passive motion (CPM) machine, which gently moves the knee through a range of motion (ROM) to prevent stiffness and swelling. The main goal of physical therapy in the hospital is to help the patient achieve independence with basic tasks, such as getting in and out of bed, walking, and using the stairs.
After discharge from the hospital, physical therapy continues in an outpatient setting or at home. The PT designs a personalized exercise program that targets the muscles around the knee joint, such as the quadriceps, hamstrings, and calf muscles. Strengthening these muscles helps stabilize the joint, reduce stress on the artificial components, and improve the overall functionality of the knee. The PT also monitors the ROM of the knee and may use manual techniques or modalities to improve it. The PT also educates the patient on how to protect the knee from injury, avoid excessive loading, and follow the post-operative protocol.
Physical therapy after TKR can last from several weeks to several months, depending on the patient’s condition, goals, and progress. The benefits of physical therapy include faster recovery, better outcomes, lower risk of complications, and higher satisfaction with the surgery.
